Happy Fourth of July! Here in the States it is Independence Day, the day we usually celebrate with barbecues and fireworks and time spent with family and friends. It is quite a festive day and I hope wherever you are in the world you can be grateful today for your own independence!
Just like people nations have birth charts. Most people consider July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia to be the founding of the United States, but the exact time of “birth” is disputed. Probably the most common time used us 5:10 PM which is known as the U.S. Sibly Chart, names after an 18th century British astrologer, Ebenezer Sibly (sometimes spelled Sibley as this was how Dane Rudhyar, another astrologer, spelled his name). But there are a lot of other times proposed and speculated upon. In fact, this is a huge area of debate for astrologers who practice what is known as “mundane astrology”. It is called mundane not because it is boring but rather because it deals with matters of the mundane world, like that of countries and politics. It is not the personal astrology that we are more common with such as our own birth charts. There are a lot of minor lunar aspects today but I am only going to focus on the main thing: a new moon at 13 Cancer. This peaks at 7:01 AM and falls directly upon the sun on the U.S.. Sibly chart(as well as all other July 4th charts for the United States). Perhaps it is my never-ending optimism that allows a new moon on the sun of the United States to give me hope of a new beginning. The new moon is conjunct both Venus and Mercury, so we have a line up of sun, moon, Mercury, Venus all in Cancer spanning 11 degrees. This new moon stellium is opposed to Pluto in Capricorn giving a sense that change, transformative change, is being demanded. We must evolve, we must change, in order to continue our existence. Things cannot go on as they have always done. I say this not only in terms of the U.S. Sibly chart but also in terms of our personal lives. The stronger this new moon is hitting your chart the more strongly you will be called to make a big change, leaving the old behind, and embracing a new way of being. Humans, by nature, are not really fans of big changes. Usually most people are dragged kicking and screaming into making changes. But here we have this message that change is imminent, in fact, it is already here, and we must recognize it is order to capitalize upon it. Otherwise we will find ourselves living too much in the past in a way of life that is no longer sustainable in the modern world. In the U.S. Sibly chart the planet Saturn, at 15 Libra, is square the sun and the new moon today forms a t-square aspect with that Saturn as the focus and also at the midpoint of the new-moon-Pluto opposition. What this means that in order to change in a way that is effective the change we are making must first and foremost be responsible. We must stop being so wasteful and we must consciously be aware of the power we wied in the world. This configuration of Sun-Saturn-Pluto can play out in a lopt of different ways but the strongest message is that we will either abuse out power or we will learn how to handle power responsibly. This is a large question that we all must deal with in our personal lives and also as members of a larger society, The Sabian symbol for the degree of the new moon is “A Hand With a Prominent Thumb Is Held Out For Study”. How are you handling your own world? Are you aware of the effect you have on your environment? We all have a much bigger impact that we realize, and this symbol asks you to consider the impact that you may be having. It also asks you to consider if you are shaping things the way you truly desire, or are you letting your dreams slip through your fingers? Just for kicks the Sabian symbol for the next degree, the degree of the U.S. Sun, is “A Very Old Man Facing A Vast Dark Space to the Northeast”. In my mind the vast, dark space represents the changes that are always unfolding and the old man is our reluctance to embrace a new way of being in light of the unknown future. This is the U.S., or at least one way to look at it. The recommended gemstone for today is sapphire which is a love stone known for promoting fidelity and attunement between lovers. Let us treat the whole world as a lover a be faithful and connected to the world in which we live. The essential oil to try today is melissa which encourages harmony while pacifying anger which is something I think we can all use. All times are in Eastern US Time. Namaste & until tomorrow!
