Feeling stuck? Hold on! Over the next month things are really going to change! The curse “May you live in interesting times” comes to mind. Things are about to get interesting. Eclipses are generally considered to be times of great change. In ancient times they were considered ill omens of fate but in modern times with understand that with great change comes new opportunity. When the light is cut off and we are left in the dark we may discover that we must take a new path to find our way moving forward. We may stumble in the dark, especially at first, but as the light comes again we can begin to see the new path clearly. In doing this we leave behind the path of the past. Every six months of so we have what astrologer call “eclipse season”. This is usually a pair of eclipses, one lunar and one solar, although sometimes there will be a third eclipse as well. This “eclipse season” we have two eclipses:
LUNAR ECLIPSES VERSUS SOLAR ECLIPSESLunar eclipses are generally more mild than solar eclipses but if they hit your natal chart then you will still feel them strongly. Usually they have more to do with internal issues such as how we think about things or how we feel. A lunar eclipse may aid us in understanding a situation and coming to terms with it. It may help us to let go of something we have been holding onto with futility. An example of this is perhaps carrying a flame for an ex for months or even years only to come to the realization that the person was never right for you anyway and it is time to move on. Other people may not be able to see the difference in you right away but internally there has definitely been a shift in perspective that frees you to move forward and you can feel the change that has taken place within you. Another example of how a lunar eclipse might affect you is perhaps feeling stuck in a dead end job and after too long of putting up with the situation you finally resolve to go back to school and find a new job. The resolve to make the change is not something clearly evident to other people as you remain in the same job while figuring out a plan to make this change happen for you, but the internal shift in perspective is there and you can feel it on a palpable level. Solar eclipses are more dramatic and often involve real changes in the physical world that are clearly evident to others. Here are some examples of things that have happened to me within a few days of an eclipse just over the past 10 years or so:
As you can see these examples encompass all areas of life: relationships, death, jobs, accidents. If I expanded the events out from within a few days of an eclipse there would be a lot more to list, as well, as I can see the links through the charts as an astrologer. But I want to keep the list short and sweet to show you that you can see significant events occurring within days of a solar eclipse that are evident to other people around you as well. Solar eclipses often force changes, whether you want the change or not. If you are lucky the changes will resonate with what you truly desire. For example the job that I was laid off from was one I hated and that was not at all good for me so even though it was awful to lose my job it was actually a good thing in the long run. LUNAR ECLIPSE AUGUST 7 The full moon lunar eclipse occurs on August 7 at 16 degrees of Aquarius. This means the moon is in Aquarius and the Sun is in Leo. Aquarius is considered a humanitarian sign while Leo is often associated with our sense of self, our ego, in both a positive and negative connotation. With this eclipse highlighting the pull between our ego versus the greater good we are asked to put our personal pride aside and take a look at the larger picture. Are we so caught up in being right that we are fighting about something that doesn’t even matter? Or are the issues at hand ones of true identity and as such should not be abandoned? Those are questions we each must answer for ourselves in our own situations. The Sabian Symbol for the full moon in Aquarius is “A Big Businessman at his Desk”. What type of “work” are you doing in your life? Are you organized and able to logistically manage all the different elements of your “business”? This also makes me think of looking at things from the big picture instead of “micromanaging” your life. What are your long term goals for development? The Sabian Symbol for this degree in Leo (where the sun is during this lunar eclipse) is “The Storm Ended, All Nature Rejoices in Brilliant Sunshine”. What storms in our own lives are we ready to release? And are we willing to celebrate the simple moments of joy in our life when things are calm again? Letting go of “drama” in order to cultivate “sunshine” in our lives is a strong message of this eclipse. Release negativity, embrace positivity. How can you do that in your own life? Can you see a way to encourage optimism? SOLAR ECLIPSE AUGUST 21The new moon solar eclipse occurs on August 21 at 29 degrees of Leo. This eclipse is being called “The Great American Eclipse” and will be visible in the US with much of the US being able to experience totality of the eclipse, meaning the entire sun will seem to disappear and only a halo will be visible. If you are watching the eclipse make sure you have special glasses to make viewing safe. This is a rare opportunity of which many people will be taking advantage. Yet there is a difference between viewing an eclipse and experience one in your own chart. Here we are being asked again to release the “ego” and ideally we reach toward a higher, more spiritual perspective on our life. The Sabian Symbol for this degree is “A Mermaid Emerges From the Ocean Waves Ready for Rebirth in Human Form.” We are moving from the subconscious into a new state of consciousness and a new form. How can you recreate yourself in your own life? Where can you be reborn? Where may you be forced into change if you do not take steps toward change on your own? HOW DO THESE ECLIPSES AFFECT YOU?Astrologers compare the chart of the eclipse to your own birth chart to see how hard you will be “hit” by the cosmic event. If your chart is being affected strongly then it is much more likely you also will be affected strongly in the real world. If you know even a little about your own chart you can determine whether or not will be significant in your life.
By looking at your birth chart an astrologer can see what area of life is being affected and how strongly. All Leos will be strongly affected this eclipse season. As will all Aquarians. The other fixed signs of Taurus and Scorpio are also being affected. And depending on your own chart there may be planets or angels getting a lot of attention from these eclipses which will cause changes large or small in your life. If you are interested in looking into your own chart with the aid of an astrologer to see how these eclipses are affecting you I am available for readings. The more stuck you feel the more change that can possibly occur. One last note: a lot of astrologers are predicting some huge changes in the US as a result of “The Great American Eclipse”, some are even predicting that Donald Trump will lose his position as the president as a result of events triggered. I will simply say that this is a harbinger of change and with change we have the choice to rise up or fall down. Let us work on rising up individually so that we have a better chance as a nation to similarly rise above much of the petty divisiveness inherent in American politics today.

New moons are times of beginnings. They are times when we can take a fresh look at things and see from a new perspective. We can set our intentions and recommit to our goals about what is important in our lives. Perhaps we have just a small glimmer of hope or perhaps we have a full fledged plan but either way we can use the time of the new moon to plant the seed of change in our patterns in order to get where we want to be in life. This Sunday July 23 we have the new moon in Leo perfecting at 3:46 AM in the very first degree of Leo, only a few hours after the sun makes his ingress into the sign where he stays for the next month. The sign of Leo is about allowing our true selves to shine. You are an individual and as such you have something unique to offer the world. Leo helps us to recognize our individual gifts and share them with others. Leo appreciates when others notice how special they are as well but we must first find our own gifts in order to share them. If you lack confidence the new moon in Leo is a wonderful time to plant the seed of courage in your heart to gain more self-confidence and a healthy sense of self love. If this idea triggers something scary inside perhaps it is a good idea to think about this more deeply. If you wish to further develop your leadership skills the new moon in Leo is a great time for focusing on this area of life as well. There are a lot of ways to improve leadership skills and maybe for you it means reading a book about the subject. Or maybe it means volunteering as a big brother or big sister to be a role model for someone younger. Or perhaps it means clarifying your own vision about where you wish to take your life or your organization. Any of these intentions can be set under the new moon in Leo and then built upon over the course of the next month. You can also look at see where the new moon falls in your own birth chart by house or aspect to see what part of your life is being highlighted. If you do not know how to do this an astrologer (like me) can help you figure this out. For example in my chart the new moon falls in my fifth house of fun, creativity, romance, and children. These are some of the areas in my life I can find highlighted over the next month or that I can willingly choose to work on over the next month through my intentions. I could set an intention to do more creative art projects with my daughter. I could also set an intention to create more fun, romantic time for myself and my husband. Usually we feel pulled in a direction already and so we can use the new moon to further along a goal we are already considering. The Sabian Symbol for this new moon is “Blood Rushes To A Man’s Head As His Vital Energies Are Mobilized Under The Spur Of Ambition”. This symbol makes me think about what it means to be really alive. Are you taking risks in your life? Are you engaging the life you truly desire to live? Stoking that inner fire is something that can make you feel alive. Leo is a fire sign, after all, and passion is a big part of all fire signs. Are you living passionately? If not what are you going to do about it? Come on, live a little! Live a lot! One last thing about this new moon … it is heavily tied into action. Don’t just set the intentions … do something about it! Don’t just wish something would change in your life … take the steps needed to make it happen. For example if you are dreaming of going back to school them enroll and go get some books that will help prepare you for your studies. If you want to travel more then don’t just plan a trip for next year go out on a day hike with a picnic and explore the area where you are living right now. If you want to learn to cook don’t just watch cooking shows on TV and instead start getting your hands dirty in the kitchen. Whatever it is take action. The stars are helping you right now the bring your desires into reality through motivation and industry. The full moon in Capricorn occurs on Saturday June 8 at 10:06 PM here in the mountain time zone. This full moon is tightly conjunct Pluto in Capricorn so it is highlighting issues surrounding power, business, politics, structure, and the idea of hierarchy. Who is in charge after all? Money is power … are we letting money control our lives? Are we consciously making decisions for ourselves or are we letting our subconscious urges push us in certain directions? Under this full moon it is a good time to look within and face our shadow. Are we afraid? What are we going to do about it? Harnessing our personal power and claiming responsibility for our own lives are the key to freeing ourselves from unhealthy patterns. The Sabian Symbol for the full moon at 18 degrees Capricorn is “The Union Jack Flies From A British Warship”. This symbol certainly seems to echo the theme of power. Historically Great Britain would police the seas with their warships to provide protection. This is an example of how we use the potential of violence in order to maintain order in our culture. Is this being used appropriately? Are those in power using their power wisely and justly? Or is power being abused to further aims that do not reflect the good of the whole? I think many see corruption in our current system and this full moon will highlight any abuse of power so look for the in the media. I expect this full moon to be a precursor to the major solar eclipse happening next month on August 21 so this full moon is just the beginning. In our personal lives we can deal with this full moon my addressing issues of control and power within our own lives. Are you a control freak? Can you let go of that need? Using the weeks following the full moon to “let go” is a perfect use of the lunar cycle. So letting go of control, of fears, of power struggles … this is the time to address these things in our lives. Depending on where the full moon falls in your natal chart you may feel this full moon highlighting a certain area of your life. For example the full moon falls in my 4th house of home, not only my physical home but also my inner world and psychology, so issues surrounding my home and family may arise, or I may do some soul searching regarding shadow issues. Choosing to set an intention at this time to better handle this area of life in some way is a great way to use this energy. For example I may renew my commitment to meditation and spend some extra time meditating about what might be holding me back internally from fully being the person I see myself being. Stay calm, reflect upon power and control instead of finding yourself in the midst of a huge power struggle. Of course if you are interested in standing up for a belief you have and showing your support publicly go right ahead. Standing up for the little guy is going to continue to be a theme this summer. Just remember to use that power wisely! Namaste! And Happy Full Moon! |
